Exploratory Trip to Philippines

In September 2024, Sunline Foundation embarked on its first exploratory mission to gain a deeper understanding of the developmental and environmental challenges in the Philippines, a country that has largely remained outside the Foundation's target regions. The Philippines faces unique challenges and potential for growth. It has one of the highest poverty rates in Southeast Asia, with approximately 16% of its population living below the poverty line (World Bank,2021) and only 60% of healthcare needs adequately met (Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2020). Additionally, the country is frequently impacted by natural disasters, underscoring the critical need for resilient infrastructure and effective support systems (Center for Disaster Philanthropy, 2023), while also being one of the world's top plastic polluters. Its landscape, shaped by over 7000 thousands of small islands, complicates the delivery of basic services but simultaneously encourages innovative solutions.

In alignment with the Foundation's commitment to addressing distinct developmental and environmental issues in the region, the Philippines has emerged as a compelling focus area, where the funding gap for relevant projects aligns well with our mission.

During our recent exploratory mission, we engaged with key stakeholders, including social enterprise incubators, funders, and thought leaders. A significant part of our journey involved supporting and shadowing a dedicated team of surgeons from Singapore General Hospital, who performed critically needed pro-bono surgeries at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMHMC) in the Northern Philippines. This experience not only highlighted the urgent healthcare needs but also showcased the remarkable dedication of hospital staff and the numerous possibilities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. With the insights gained and new dialogues initiated with key stakeholders, we are inspired to play an active role in addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by the Philippines. Together, we can foster impactful change and uplift communities in need.
